Feng Shui before renovating your HDB组屋装修前,应该先了解什么风水?

Before deciding how your home should look, consider how it works.

在决定房子要装修成什么样子之前,先了解它。

Purchasing an HDB flat is a significant milestone for many Singapore families. Whether it is a Build-To-Order (BTO) flat or a resale unit, the next exciting step is often renovation. Flooring, cabinets, lighting, furniture and colour schemes quickly become the centre of attention.

But there is one question worth asking before finalising the renovation: “Have I properly understood the home I am about to renovate?”

From a traditional Feng Shui perspective, a home is more than its interior appearance. Its surroundings, orientation, layout and relationship with the occupants are also considered.

Begin outside the home, not inside

One of the principles I emphasise in Feng Shui is:

形先于气,气随形走。

In traditional Feng Shui, the physical form of the environment is examined before more detailed interpretations of Qi. Before focusing on the placement of furniture or decorative objects, consider the surroundings of the property. For example:

  • What buildings, roads or other structures surround the flat?
  • Where are the main sources of natural light and ventilation?
  • Are there external features that significantly affect the view, privacy, noise or comfort?
  • How does the flat relate to its surrounding environment?

Some external conditions are beyond a homeowner's control. This is precisely why understanding the property before making major renovation decisions can be valuable.

Understand the layout before deciding what to change

A beautiful renovation does not necessarily result in a practical home. Consider how the different spaces will be used. Where should the dining area be located? Can the living room remain comfortable and functional? Will the bedrooms accommodate the family's needs?

Traditional Feng Shui also considers factors such as the orientation of the property, the placement of the entrance, the kitchen and the bedrooms. However, these should be evaluated in relation to the actual property rather than through generic rules applied to every home.

Two HDB flats with similar floor plans may have very different surrounding environments and orientations.

Pay attention to the entrance

The main entrance is an important consideration in many traditional Feng Shui approaches. It is also the point where people enter and leave the home every day.

Consider whether the entrance is sufficiently accessible, reasonably well-lit and free from unnecessary obstructions. A practical entrance should support the household's daily movements.

Not every entrance needs additional decorations, symbolic objects or elaborate remedies. Sometimes, a well-considered layout is more useful than adding another item.

Think carefully about your bedrooms and kitchen

Bedrooms and kitchens deserve particular attention because of their importance in daily living.

For bedrooms, consider the available space, bed position, storage, ventilation, privacy and comfort. For the kitchen, consider the relationship between the cooking area, circulation space, storage and the household's routine.

A Feng Shui assessment may involve further traditional considerations based on the property's orientation and layout. However, these should not compromise safe design, proper ventilation or the functional needs of the occupants.

Understand what renovation cannot change

Renovation can improve many aspects of a home. But it cannot relocate the entire building, remove neighbouring structures or freely alter every part of an HDB flat. There are also structural and regulatory limitations.

In Singapore, homeowners must follow HDB renovation requirements. Certain works require prior approval, and HDB's rules restrict alterations that could affect structural integrity.

This is why major layout decisions should not be based solely on aesthetic preferences or unverified Feng Shui suggestions. Consult qualified renovation professionals and check the relevant HDB guidelines before proceeding.

A responsible recommendation should recognise what can be changed, what should remain untouched and what is simply outside our control.

Should Feng Shui be done before or after renovation?

From a planning perspective, it can be useful to consider Feng Shui before major renovation decisions are finalised. At this stage, there may still be flexibility in the placement of furniture, cabinetry, room functions and other permitted design features. Once renovation is complete, some changes may become inconvenient or expensive.

However, this does not mean that homeowners who have already renovated should worry. An assessment can still focus on understanding the existing space and identifying practical improvements where appropriate. The purpose is not to create unnecessary anxiety or additional expenses.

Does every home need Feng Shui objects?

No. At Qian Yi Metaphysics, I do not sell Feng Shui objects, ornaments or remedies.

My approach focuses on understanding the physical environment, studying the traditional Feng Shui considerations relevant to the property, and discussing practical recommendations with the homeowner.

Not every situation requires purchasing something. Not every challenge requires a renovation. And not every problem can be resolved by placing an object in a particular corner.

Before you renovate, ask yourself

  • Have I considered the property's external surroundings?
  • Do I understand the main entrance, kitchen and bedroom arrangements?
  • Will the proposed layout work for the people living here?
  • Are my renovation plans structurally safe and compliant with HDB requirements?
  • Am I making changes because they are genuinely useful, or simply because somebody has told me to be afraid?

A home should be a place where the people living in it feel comfortable and supported. Traditional Feng Shui offers one perspective for examining the relationship between people and their environment. It should be applied thoughtfully alongside practical planning and professional renovation advice.

Before spending more on your home, take the time to understand it.
