What is a luck cycle (大运)?什么是大运？

If you have looked at your BaZi chart, you may have seen a row of pillars marked with ages: 7, 17, 27 and so on. These are your luck cycles (大运). This guide explains what they are, how to read them, and what they can and can't tell you on their own.

What a luck cycle is大运是什么

Your birth chart is fixed, but the influences around it change over time. BaZi describes those changes in 10-year periods. Each period has its own pillar, a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch, which interacts with your birth chart for those ten years. A useful picture is the seasons: the land stays the same, but spring and winter bring very different conditions.

命盘是固定的，但周遭的影响会随时间改变。八字以十年为一段来描述这些变化。每一步大运都有自己的一柱，即一个天干与一个地支，在这十年里与你的命盘互动。可以把它想象成四季：土地不变，但春天与冬天带来的条件截然不同。

Why your cycles start at a particular age为什么起运年龄因人而异

Luck cycles are counted from your month pillar. Whether they run forwards or backwards depends on the year you were born and your gender. The age your first cycle begins, anywhere from under a year old to about 10, depends on how far your birthday falls from the nearest change of solar term. That is why two people born in the same year can change cycles at different ages.

How to read a luck cycle pillar怎么看一步大运

• The age and years tell you when the cycle starts and ends.
• The Heavenly Stem (top character) is the more visible influence, the side others notice.
• The Earthly Branch (bottom character) is the deeper root of the cycle, with hidden stems inside it.
• The Ten God labels show what role the cycle plays in relation to you, such as resources, output, wealth or pressure.

• 年龄与年份：这一步大运从何时开始、到何时结束。
• 天干（上方的字）是较外显的影响，别人比较看得到的一面。
• 地支（下方的字）是这步大运更深层的根，内藏藏干。
• 十神显示这步大运相对你扮演的角色，例如印、食伤、财或官杀。

A common rule of thumb is that the stem is felt more in the first half of a cycle and the branch more in the second, though in practice the two work together throughout.

常见的说法是：前五年较看天干，后五年较看地支。不过实际上，两者在整步大运中是一起作用的。

What a change of cycle can feel like换运时可能的感受

The years around a change of cycle often feel unsettled. Things that worked before stop working, priorities shift, and you may not understand why. I went through this myself in my mid-twenties. Knowing that you are in a transition doesn't stop it, but it changes how you move through it.

Luck cycles and the year ahead大运与流年

Each year also has its own pillar (流年). The year interacts with both your birth chart and your current luck cycle, which is why the same year can feel very different for two people.

每一年也有自己的一柱，称为流年。流年会同时与命盘和当前大运互动，所以同一年，对不同的人感受可以很不一样。

What a luck cycle can't tell you on its own单看大运看不出什么

A cycle is only good or difficult in relation to your whole chart. The same element can support one person and strain another. Reading a cycle properly means knowing which elements your chart needs, how strong your Day Master is, and how the cycle meets the rest of your chart. That is what a full reading looks at.

一步大运是好是难，只能相对整个命盘来看。同一个五行，对某人是助力，对另一人可能是压力。要好好解读大运，得先知道命盘需要哪些五行、日主强弱，以及这步大运如何与命盘其余部分相遇。这正是完整解读要看的。
